Conservative reactions to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the censorship procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly demanded greater openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet some do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled certain rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
However, broader discourse on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy binders of materials that contained little new information.
